@aral this is (if you're me) actually a really important point. I feel like something can only really become shit if it starts from a shit place. Even if along the way it managed to be good at *something* it still started from a opportunity of the means to a self-serving ends

@aral enshittification is just the polish fading from the turd

@fasterandworse @aral I argued that it's just everything Marx and free market pro-competition anti-monopoly types have said for about a century: that left to their own devices, companies will monopolize and extract excess profits and deliver subpar service that customers are trapped in (sometimes even trapped as employees/slaves too) until collapse or revolution

Then Doctorow got pissy at me and I blocked him, which really did a number on my idolization of him

@fasterandworse
It just takes 2 managers and maybe 6 months if they're willing to use the first 3 months to put everybody into disciplinary proceedings to force folks to spend the second 3 months adding loot boxes / ai / long wait times / paid add ons / advertising / paid in game currency / rewards plans / self service / social elements / scarcity messaging / mailing list modals / reduced variety / smaller packages / cheaper formulation / outsourcing / surveillance / less maintenance / no raclette / knockoff brands

You might need an extra 3 months if the thing was very good and there are labour protections
