In new work for , led by @klukoff, we show that adaptable commitment interfaces can promote user agency, satisfaction, and goal alignment.

Kai built two interfaces for a YouTube client: one with attention-capture patterns of modern social media applications and one designed to promote focused video searching and viewing experiences. He also built a third version, in which people could switch between the two versions.

Because people visit YouTube for a range of goals, such as finding a specific tutorial or explainer, or for more undirected entertainment, each interface actually supported different goals, and the version of the app that supported toggling between each was *just enough* of a commitment device that people could better align with the interface with their current goals or intent.

@smunson @klukoff Looks great, I love the focus on a (seemingly) simple UI change/extension and its detailed evaluation! 👍 I'm currently updating my "Intelligent User Interfaces" lecture and will add it to the reading list for the session on interaction with recommender systems. If you also have a video teaser / presentation please let me know. 😊

@smunson @klukoff congrats on this work! I look forward to seeing your presentation.
